Structural Engineer Job Purpose: To design the framework that will hold a structure together, research and calculate the forces that will affect the structure, and ensure the structure will be strong and flexible enough to withstand the stresses and strains it will endure over its lifetime.
Structural Engineer Job Duties:
Consider the shapes and materials to use in the design of the structure that will match the architect’s vision.
Calculates both the dead and live loads of the structure and ensure the structure is designed to safely withstand these loads.
Ensure that the structure will be able to withstand both the lateral and vertical forces of nature.
Consult with architects to balance the design and “look” of the structure with the function and safety of the structure.
Generate solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing a structure including extreme climates and natural disasters.
Ensure that the structure will remain safe and “fit for purpose” throughout its design life.
